Iceland was once the pride of Europe—a strong economy, beautiful people, supposedly one of the happiest nations on Earth. Then it went bankrupt. Snowblind examines Iceland at exactly this moment, detailing what happens when a drug deal turns sour. At the heart of the novel lies the fragile relationship between Jón, a morally confused banker, and his estranged brother Palli. As winter suffocates them with 20 hours of darkness, the brothers find themselves on the run from Gummi, Iceland’s only true homicide detective. As they crisscross Iceland, the torturous chase unearths a bewitching country, unforgiving terrain and spiritual darkness that leads to murder.

I know the author of this book, and I got an advance copy because... well, he mentions a song I used to perform in Reykjavik bars in this book. I read and enjoyed Ring Road, his other novel, which was a somewhat turgid flight of fancy about the oddity of begin a visitor to Iceland. Snowblind couldn't be further from that. Snowblind is an insider's guide to the genuine lunacy of daily life in Reykjavik in 2007-2009. If you lived in Reykjavik at that time, Jon (the main character) will ring fantastically true (his quotes could be word for word from the overdressed clients of the club Oliver in 2008). In fact, I can't think of a many places where you can find an accurate unfiltered view of what life was like when the boom hit, and when the bottom dropped out on the Icelandic economy.
If you're curious about Iceland or about just different ways of living, I've got to say you'll learn more from this than from site-seeing.
Beyond the Iceland aspect-- there's humor here. And humanity. And, in my opinion, accurate satire. And crime. Casting an eye on an actual banker is a nice touch-- there was so little being gained during the boom. What will likely shock readers is that so much of this is so close to the truth-- in the same way that Laxness quotes, which I always thought were the most vicious satire, were often just lifted from history. (Not saying this is Laxness, but that singular tool is used here, of the honest depiction being crueler than any invented joke.)
On the Amazon version-- I'd read this before in paper form-- it's a nice layout and reads very quickly, which is fitting for Edward's writing style, fluid prose with excellent takeaway lines. I genuinely recommend this book, and hope that the series of 66 Degrees North books continues.

Snowblind 66 Degrees North Book 2 edition by Edward Weinman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Like Weinman's first novel, The Ring Road, his follow-up, Snowblind, shows a curiosity for catastrophe and reveals a side of Iceland not seen in the tourist brochures. Snowblind is a morality tale that keeps the readers rooting for the so-called bad guys.
Poor
I love this author. I'm just in awe of the writing.
Not my type at all Too much blood for too little plot
A bit to contrived for me. If a comedy then it didn't make me LOL.
And, last time Weinman reader. I bought the 1st and 2nd 66 Degrees North books at the same and never finished either. The books are slow to develop, the characters are not believable, and there are far too many sheep. I read 50, or so, books a year, both fiction and nonfiction, and these books are very poorly written.
I enjoy Nordic Noir mysteries and Iceland is a favorite setting. As to both of Weinman's "66 Degrees North" books, I read them both through so they are gripping and engaging. Worth the reads, but a warning these novels are very, very grim. Not for the squeamish!
