A collection of experiences and musings from Dr. James Tresner. Masonic education is fast becoming the watchword of all Masonic Grand Lodges, or those that are developing programs that appeal to those men coming to the Craft with an expectation of some degree of enlightenment. Too often, however, speakers and available material seems radically to one side of a coin or another. Wildly esoteric and delving into occult language that has little interest for many, or completely and utterly dry regurgitating the acceptable Masonic histories and litanies of old. This book strikes a perfect balance and has something for everyone in a tone and approach that feels a little like you have just met up with the character in real life from the old tyler talks. The tone of the book transports you to a wonderful little room, fireplace burning, Jim on his pipe, too wonderfully comfy chairs and great conversation. We can't let the conversational tone of the book fool us though. There are some real meaty topics handled within this almost 450 page volume. Everything from music to symbolism, from esotericism to morality, no topic seems off limits, but every topic is covered with the same widened and kind approach that is Dr. Jim Tresner.

Anyone can gain wisdom from this book, but the target group is going to be Freemasons. For them (us), this book is a gem. Many Masons will be familiar with Brother Tresner's work from the various outlets he writes for. This book is a compilation of stories, speeches, and papers he has given us over the years. He tells in the book of being on the front porch of his cabin in Colorado with his friends, just talking and enjoying the friendship and watching nature ease along. This is not only a story in the book, but is how the whole book feels. It takes you to that porch in the mountains of Colorado where Brother Jim shares his stories with you. Since it is a collection of short lessons, it makes for a light comfortable read. I burned through it quickly, but it would be a great book to just ease along with, taking your time and picking up at your leisure. I especially enjoyed the way Brother Tresner seams to bridge the gap between the "old gaurd" and the younger generation. I highly recommend this book for all members of the Craft. F&S. But I Digress Dr James Tresner 9780615657004 Books Reviews
Dr. Tresner is a phenomenal researcher and an artful writer (skills which are not always connected in Masonic circles). I not only enjoyed every page of this book (and will again and again) but I learned so very much! This was truly the book I was waiting for in that it isn't a dense treatise on the inner workings of the Craft, but a tour of the "interesting bits." It will pull you in and make you want to go learn more, and I don't think I could give any such book higher praise.
This is a very good book. I would recomend it for anyone to read that is interested in masonic works.
I must say that Dr. Tresner has put together a wonderful compilation of thoughts and instructions based in his life experiences. I find his words to be inspiring and thought provoking. Thank you for your work.

Dr. Tresner has compiled an excellent list of articles he has written of various Masonic subjects over the years. Each chapter is short enough to hold the readers attention, yet meaningful enough to impart wisdom on its readers.
Dr. Tresner is a treasure to our Masonic family.
I read this on and loved it. I wish I personally knew the author as I have many questions. He's a great writer and this is perfect reading for any Mason interested in short stories about our craft.
Great for Lodge presentations, or just to keep on your own night-stand for casual reading.
This an excellent book to read, and one that can be read in over and over many times and still get enjoyment and learning each time. If I had more time I could write a glowing review of this book. Suffice to say reading this book is very much like listening to Brother Tresner talk with you about Freemasonry. Get the book, you'll be happy you bought it. Ed Halpaus
