101 Running Tips From The Streaking Runner eBook Judy Mick Reviews
Though I've been running for over 3 years, I still consider myself new to the sport. My preferred max distance is a half marathon and with four under my belt, I'm still a newbie and amazed how training for each one has been different from the last. Each has brought a new and 'exciting' injury or physical challenge with it that has made me think it's my body's way of saying 'STOP'. Judy touches on all of the potential challenges - I found myself saying 'YES!' as I turned the page to read about ITB, plantar fasciitis, nutritional needs, etc. (My favorite was runner's headaches! No one talks about this!) It was very reassuring to read that all of these things may be experienced but do not need to sideline your running future. THAT was what I loved about this book. It has an underlying message that says all runners feel this or that at some point...here are some basic starting tips on how to deal with it and keep going!
101 Running Tips From The Streaking Runner is a book that is loaded with advice for people who are interested in running. The book is written in a way that makes it easy to read - even if English is not your first language. Judy Mick is an expert in this field as she has been running every day since 1978. This fact alone will tell you that she must know what she is writing about.
Judy has taken all the articles she has written over the years and combined them into a book which will help you if you are planning on getting back into running, or are currently a runner and want to remain one. It has 8 chapters which deal with separate topics such as health and injury tips, nutrition, training tips, road racing, running apparel, mindset and then a section with miscellaneous articles relating to running.
In my view this book is not one to be read like a novel - but rather as a reference book to turn to for help when you have an issue in connection with your running and are seeking advice. The book is packed with many valuable tips. For example, if you have just started running again after a break from the sport, then there are articles with advice for you about how to go about this without getting injured. The book is littered with health tips and why running is so good for you. Some that interested me were about running and allergies, running and asthma, and how to deal with cramps while running.
I was delighted to read that the pain in my heels more than likely is due to a condition called plantar fasciitis, and that it will not stop me running! Judy gives some advice on common injuries from running and the treatments we can do at home to alleviate them. There is so much advice in this book that if you are keen on your running, I would highly recommend that you get it and keep it handy to refer to often.
The basic repetitive act of plonking one foot in front of the other makes running a simultaneously simple & difficult task. Ms. Mick's book has some great advice on how to make it less arduous. Organized in 8 chapters, the book has great content on avoiding & treating injuries, diet, tips for training & racing on the road, running a marathon, running apparel, running mindset - I find this part most compelling - & some sundry advice in general.
Written as essays over many years, the content is rich. And this is not say that the content is fantastic but covers a handful of topics. The variety of topics, in addition to the richness of the content, is an asset of this book. Ms. Mick has a easy, flowing, conversational style & deliberately avoids the intricate scientific details that she bases her advice on. Depending on your own experience, you're likely to find that many of her recommendations may echo your thoughts, & in some cases perhaps, certain points of view may have evolved since Ms. Mick penned the original article.
The other great thing about this book is its structure. A digital edition makes it easy for you to quickly navigate to the specific tip you're looking for. Having said that, an index at the end would have been great, & hyperlink to studies that she bases her opinion on could have been made a bibliography or a further reading section.
In the end, Ms. Mick's book is a great companion - & I say this to mean that this is not a one-time read - to all of us interested in running. If you have a good answer to "Why do I run?", this book will help you to answer most of the hows.
