Bill Hayes came to New York City in 2009 with a one-way ticket and only the vaguest idea of how he would get by. But, at 48 years old, having spent decades in San Francisco, he craved change.

Grieving over the death of his partner, he quickly discovered the profound consolations of the city's incessant rhythms, the sight of the Empire State Building against the night sky, and New Yorkers themselves, kindred souls that Hayes, a lifelong insomniac, encountered on late-night strolls with his camera.

And he unexpectedly fell in love again, with his friend and neighbor, the writer and neurologist Oliver Sacks, whose exuberance - 'I don't so much fear death as I do wasting life,' he tells Hayes early on - is captured in funny and touching vignettes throughout. What emerges is a portrait of Sacks at his most personal and endearing, from falling in love for the first time at age 75 to facing illness and death (Sacks died of cancer in August 2015).

Insomniac City is both a meditation on grief and a celebration of life, a love song to the New York City and to all who have felt the particular magic and solace it offers.

This isn't just one story-- it's several. Bill Hayes writes movingly about the love he shared with Oliver Sacks, in ways that reassure all of us that great love is not only possible in life, it transcends all barriers, all challenges, all doubt and darkness. "Insomniac City" is also a love story about New York, told not only with exquisitely poetic words, but through the author's beautiful photographs, each one a kind of visual novel about the people and parts of New York City. But most of all, this is a love story about life, about finding the strength to pick yourself up after loss or defeat and dare yourself to live and love again. No one will be able to put this book down at the end without feeling profoundly grateful for every word, and every moment.

Insomniac City New York Oliver and Me (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Hayes Stephen Bel Davies Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews

A simply charming evocation of a special love affair with the great man, Oliver Sacks, and also with the great city. Very special piece of writing, very special writer/human being.
Bill is a good writer who is gay. He falls in love with Oliver Sacks and finally it seems that Oliver is able to have a relationship with a man who loves him. Bill has recently moved to New York after his lover died. He connects with life in New York and writes a series of small stories about this as well as about his love affair. The book is delightful and after I had read Sacks book I was happy that at the end of his life he got to have such a meaningful relationship.
In this fascinating and engaging memoir, author, Bill Hayes, beautifully interweaves a charming and intimate portrait of his beloved Oliver with the charm and mystique of New York City and its inhabitants.  Simple yet poignant photos enhance his vivid and colorful descriptions of everyday New York life - enough to transport me, a die-hard suburbanite, to the urban wonders of his Manhattan neighborhood.  What impressed me the most, however, was the blueprint for life that he and Oliver shared.   From their frequent travels to their apartment rooftop rituals, they lived even the most minute details of life to the fullest.   Well done Bill!  I enthusiastically recommend Insomniac City!
I started reading this in the morning and couldn't stop. It's extraordinary.
I loved all Oliver Sacks' accounts (read all books & NYT articles), so anything speaking of Sacks' life would be readable. Bill Hays is readable, but he's not an Oliver Sacks in being truly astonishing & amazing. I did not mind his account of a homosexual relationship w/Dr. Sacks, who previously had been celibate for 35 years. If such a subject would personally bother you, do not read this account of the much loved Sacks. Of these accounts, Hayes restrains himself to the "acceptable," leaving aside anything "too intimate." Although one might question the motives of this account, I was happy to see that Dr. Sacks received some thoughtful human affection in his last years.
Last year I enjoyed reading Oliver Sacks' memoir, On The Move, published very near his death. In that excellent volume, Sacks described the process of finally coming out as a gay man and embarking upon his first relationship in thirty-five years. This particular relationship, with the writer/photographer Bill Hayes, would sustain and delight Sacks until the end of his life a few short years later. Insomniac City describes the final years of the good doctor's life from Hayes' point of view. In addition, it is a nearly poetic description of the author's blossoming love affair with New York City, where he moved just before meeting Dr. Sacks. Some of the most enchanting passages relate delightful episodes in the daily life of this most fascinating of American metropolises. I enjoyed this book immensely, and reveled in the author's masterful juxtaposition of the tale of his two great loves Oliver and New York.
I couldn't put the book down. It is just as Maria Popova of BrainPickings described - unbearably beautiful. The photography by the artist/author Is soul shifting. Mr Hayes's sensitivity and emotional intelligence is beyond brilliant - evident through his delicate depictions of fragile human gems that are hidden in broad day (and night) light around New York City.
I have read and admired Oliver Sacks for a long time so it was especially touching to see his human side from the eyes of a loved one. A wonderful love story. A page turner.
